School Presentations

School presentations involves talking to students of various ages about the importance of proper dog care, sterilizations (age appropriate), and some understanding of canine behavior. We have standard props such as puppets and other props. In some cases, we bring dogs to the classroom for the children to interact. We also have PowerPoint and video presentations.

Locations:

Presenter
Key Responsibilities:
  • Present age-appropriate lessons to students in Spanish
  • Use props or other tools to effectively communicate the topic or lesson
  • Answer questions and handle interactions of the students
  • Engage the students in a manner than encourages participation
Training:
  • Volunteer Orientation
  • Education Outreach Guidebook training
  • On-the-job training
Qualifications:
  • Willingness to support the Amigos de 4 Patas La Paz mission
  • Punctuality
  • Understanding of the topics to be presented such that questions from the students can be answered
  • Ability to follow a lesson plan and use props to make the lesson interesting and engaging
  • Basic Spanish so that the lesson can be communicated in Spanish and questions can be handled in Spanish (we sometimes have bilingual volunteers to assist in translation).
Time Commitment:
  • 3-4 hours per presentation; presentation opportunities from the schools are usually by invitation. As we have more volunteers to participate in these, we will be able to accept more requests.
Audio visual and equipment assistance
Key Responsibilities:
  • Set up the equipment for school presentations
  • Start and stop videos or PowerPoint presentations for the presenter
  • Disassemble and pack up the equipment at the conclusion of the presentation
Training:
  • Volunteer Orientation

  • On-the-job training
Qualifications:
  • Basic understanding of how audio visual equipment is to be hooked up (laptop, speakers, projector), disconnected, stored, and transported
  • Ability to start, stop, and set up the presentations
Time Commitment:
  • 3-4 hours per presentation; presentation opportunities from the schools are usually by invitation. As we have more volunteers to participate in these, we will be able to accept more requests.
Dog handler
Key Responsibilities:
  • Handle dogs in a classroom (selected because they are appropriate for children)
  • Assist the children and dogs to interact in a safe and human manner
Training:
  • Volunteer Orientation

  • On-the-job training
Qualifications:
  • Basic understanding of dog behavior
  • Basic understanding of human, adolescent, and child behavior
  • Ability to handle dogs and children as they interact
