Mayo prefers soccer.

And if you’re looking for a four-legged teammate with enthusiasm, determination, and absolutely no respect for the offside rule, you’ve found your guy.

Mayo loves to play soccer. He also enjoys walks, playing with children, and spending time with other dogs, especially the little ones.

He’s a friendly teammate once he gets comfortable, although he prefers his canine companions not to bark too enthusiastically in his face.

Even professional athletes have their limits.

Mayo’s story began when neighbors noticed him wandering around, apparently lost. People tried to catch him, but Mayo had other ideas. It took about three weeks before someone was finally able to bring him to safety, just as the rainy weather was becoming a concern.

Eventually, the truth came out.

Mayo had lived with a family who moved away and left him behind. When the property’s owner put him out on the street, Mayo was left to fend for himself.

Perhaps that’s why he doesn’t immediately trust every person he meets.

Mayo likes to take his time getting acquainted. But with patience and kindness, he’s learning that humans can be trusted again. His rescuer has been working with him, and he’s making progress.

He’s also working on a few other things.

For example, Mayo sometimes gets so excited during play that he uses his mouth a little too enthusiastically. His playful nibbles can be stronger than intended, so he’ll need continued guidance to learn gentler manners.

And then there’s his interest in exploring the world beyond the front gate.

Mayo has been known to look for an escape route when he feels uncomfortable. Once he settles in and feels secure, that behavior decreases considerably. But an open door is still an invitation he finds difficult to resist.

So his future family will need to take secure fencing, doors, and gates seriously.

Mayo is a high-energy dog who needs plenty of exercise, playtime, and a family willing to help him continue learning. He already comes when called, but his other obedience skills are still a work in progress.

He would love a home with friendly dogs, affectionate and patient humans, and plenty of opportunities to burn off energy.

Cats are not on his preferred team roster, and a sedentary household wouldn’t be a good match.

What Mayo needs most is someone who understands that trust takes time, good manners take practice, and a dog who’s been abandoned may need a little extra reassurance before he feels at home.

In return, you’ll get an enthusiastic companion, a devoted playmate, and a soccer partner who’s always ready for another match.

Just remember to close the gate before kickoff.
