To operate legally within both the United State and Mexico, we have two separate, legal entities – one for each country:
- Voluntarios por los perros de La Paz, A.C. (aka “Amigos de 4 Patas”) – Amigos de 4 Patas (Amigos) means friends of 4-leggeds and is the Mexican entity. Income and expenses on the financial statements are in MXN or pesos. This is how it is reported, taxed, and accounted for in Mexico.
- Hope 4 La Pawz (Hope) is the U.S. Charity incorporated in the State of Washington through the charities program. Hope also received tax exempt status under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). This means donors can deduct their contributions from their US tax filings and Hope is qualified to receive tax deductible bequests, devices, transfers, and gifts. You can verify Hope’s federal status here. As a Washington charity, Hope files annual reports by July 31 of each year as well as calendar year-end reports to other entities. Income and expenses on the financial statements are in USD.
Amigos is the entity used for the work of rescuing and rehabilitating the dogs so they can be put up for adoption. In cases where dogs are adopted in Mexico, this is handled by the Mexican charity, Amigos.
Hope manages the adoptions and transports of dogs to the US and Canada and also provides financial support to the Mexican charity, Amigos.
